Why are so many people moving to Panamá City, Panamá?

December 12, 2020

For the longest time, Panamá has been the perfect place for Retirees and Adventurous Entrepreneurs to live and enjoy a different and as most will tell you, a way better lifestyle, with great weather and like-minded new friends.

A few years back we started to see more and more digital nomads moving to the country for all the reasons you will read below.

Now, however, we have two new groups of people looking at and moving to Panama. Persons working in technology sector, and, no I am not talking about digital nomads, yet technology personal that due to COVID-19 will never have to return to a traditional office setting again. So why live in a cold and ever so expensive city like San Francisco, California or Chicago, Illinois? When, for a fraction of the cost you can live in the beautiful and metropolitan city such as Panama City, in the republic of Panama?

The other group of people we are now seeing looking at and moving to Panama is political folks, or shall I say, the not so political folks that prefer not to be caught in the crossfire of the lingering civil unrest we see brewing between the right and left in the United States.

So, why are all these people choosing Panama? Well, where do I begin? First, we use the US dollar, we have great first world medical services, highly ranked international schools and a large number of Panamanians speak English as the US was stationed here for many years when the United States controlled the Panama Canal. Besides, Panama offers easy Visa programs and the ability to gain permanent residency much easier than other countries.

Safety is always a huge factor for people when choosing Panama, as most expats living here will tell you they have never felt safer. Panama City is full of amazing skyscrapers and condos for both rent and purchase are priced much lower than US cities. You can find many great international restaurants, the Panama Canal is located within the city limits, the old Town of Casco Viejo is a marvelous place to spend afternoons and evenings. Panama City has so much to offer, and it is best to talk with a relocation specialist to get the full scoop and benefits of having someone with the know-how to make sure you get networked with the right people.

One of the biggest reasons people love Panama City is due to its geographical location, finding an adventure is very easy and close by. Here are a few of my favorite places to visit outside the city, and trust me there are many others, just too many to list in this article.

1) The Pearl Islands, the Hawaii of Panama, located on the Pacific side of Panama is only a 90-minute ferry ride from the hustle and bustle of the city and provides a wonderland of beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Here, in season, you can witness Humpback whales, amazing deep-sea fishing and, of course, magical relaxation is always offered.

2) Bocas del Toro Islands on the Caribbean side of Panama can be reach via plane from Albrook Airport with two different airlines or a private plane in less than one hour. This archipelago is another magical wonderland with many restaurants, a crazy nightlife (at least it did before COVID-19) and adventures galore. One of my favorite activities is the four wheelers from Flying Pirates. Oh my gosh talk about a fun and crazy adventure.

3) Boquete, is a beautiful mountain town, best-known for having the world’s Best Coffee, and that is a literal statement which I will discuss in a future article. To get there from the city is either a 45-minute flight plus a 45-minute drive (in a rental car) or you can drive from Panama City to Boquete in 5.5 – 7 hours, depending on your driving style and how many stops you make. Another highlight of this Panamanian region is Volcan Barú, the highest mountain in the country. It is the only place in the World where you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from one point.

Now, Panama isn’t for everyone, so do your research, set up a visit, and make sure to pack heavy as it is seen over and over again that people coming to investigate Panama as a place to relocate tend to extend their trip and/or once getting here look for ways to ship down any belongings they wish to have in Panama.
